For a relaxing weekend away or a short break, why not try the beautiful Charente Maritime region (17) of France renown for its Charente River, Cognac Brandy and Oysters, Charente-Maritime's most famous gourmet product - Oysters are in abundance and are excellent value.

Our Bed and Breakfast is close to the ancient towns of Cognac a handsome historical 17th century town prominent with the world famous Cognac houses and Saintes a vibrant town once the Roman capital of SW France.Both towns are full of great architecteur situated on the Charente river and both have cobbled streets packed with cafes and shops.

Our Bed and Breakfast is surrounded by forest and vineyards that produce the grape for Cognac and the local aperitif 'Pineau'. We are in the commune of Cherac in the golden triangle of Cognac growers known as the Borderies.

Gite du Calme is just a short and pretty cycle ride to our local village of Chérac, passing vineyards and local farms with cattle and horses. In Chérac you can buy your French bread daily, fresh local produce from the Boulangerie and the local Boucherie/Butchers. Other shops include a chemist/pharmacy where the owners speak pretty good English and are very helpful. There is also a cafe/bar where you can get your fishing permit a postoffice, hairdressers, the farmers cooporative and the tabac come gift shop. On Saturday morning's there is the fresh oyster seller. Chérac is in the heart of the Cognac and Pineau region and during your stay you might like to visit one of the local producers of Cognac and Pineau and sample the many ages and varieites that are available.

If you are passionate about mushrooms, like every French man, then our B&B is the perfect place for you. The forest behind the Gite has an abundunce of the famous cepe champignon/mushrooms.

Just another short cycle ride away is Dompierre on the Charente rviers edge. Here you will find another fine Boulongerie that sells the most delicious selection of breads including the ever popular Pain au Maize (Corn bread) and cakes. Next door is a road-side vendor of fresh fruit and vegetables. Here in Dompierre you have many picnic areas with some beautiful walks/views along the Charente river.

Everyday in virtually every town you will find an open or undercover street market selling fresh fruit, vegtables, mouth watering cheeses, pate's, meats and fish including the delicious home grown oysters and mussels. The first Monday of every month the whole of Saintes is cut off to traffic and is one enormous market selling everything from food, clothing, fashion accessories, fishing equipement, plants in fact too many things to mention, this is a good day out.

If your passion is golf there are two 18 hole and one 9 hole golf courses both offering reasonable green fees and superb facilities very close to Gite du Calme B&B.
